The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Here are some questions for The Hunger Games. I hope they don't include any information from Catching Fire. I know at least one of you has finished both books, but I have tried to be careful to not include any questions regarding the second book. I will also try and limit my responses to information only in the first book. Sorry if I have failed in this endeavor. :)

Do you think the Gamemakers wanted Katniss to win? Why? What would they have to gain or lose from her winning?

What do you think about Katniss and Rue's relationship? How is it different from the other relationships in the arena?

When Peeta declares his love for Katniss in the interview, does he really mean it or did Haymitch create the "star-crossed lovers" story? What does Haymitch mean when he says, "It's all a big show. It's all how you're perceived."

Team Peeta or Team Gale? Or Neither, I guess.

What do you think about the Hunger Games? Too morbid for young adults? Believable that it could happen in a society for so long without previous rebellion?

What do you make of the whole introduction of Katniss and Peeta in the arena? Do you think that their remarkable entrance hurt them or helped them?

Which children were the worst off? The ones in the Districts where the children were raised to think that competing to kill other children and possibly die themselves was honorable as in Districts 1 & 2? Or the outlying districts which were so poor that the inhabitants had to forage for the smallest portions just to stay alive?
